Gastroenterology (GI) focuses on digestion and issues of the digestive system. We provide services including but not limited to colonoscopies, Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), endoscopies, and GI ultrasounds. If you believe you are having digestive symptoms or issues that are preventing you from a higher quality of life, please call our hospital to schedule an appointment with one of our gastroenterologists.
In gastroenterology, imaging plays a key role in diagnosing conditions. The following are some common imaging techniques used in the GI Department:
- Endoscopy. An endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure in which a flexible tube called an endoscope is used to examine parts of the digestive tract. A light and camera are attached to the endoscope, allowing doctors to see color images of the digestive tract.
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Also referred to as an upper GI endoscopy, an EGD is used to view the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
- Colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is also a form of endoscopy. However, the endoscope enters the body through the rectum in order to view the large intestine.
- GI ultrasound. Also called an abdominal ultrasound, the procedure uses sound waves to produce images of the internal organs. Ultrasounds are safe, painless, and non-invasive, and capture images in real time.
